Creativity is unique. It's unplanned and often times born out of mistakes. It's something I've tried to grab a hold of for a long time but I've come to realize it just happens. So what do you do when it's not "just happening"? Unfortunately, I don't think there's one right answer, but the best answer I've heard so far is "Just Go". Those were the words of renowned artist Chase Jarvis yesterday during a casual group discussion after Chase Jarvis LIVE. "Just go. Just go out and do things. Get experience whether that's going out to eat or going for a walk." Lately, I've had a hard time balancing making art and running a business. Both are totally necessary and pretty equal in importance. If either is overlooked, there's a good chance I will fail. So how do we stay creative but also stay on track with the business? Just go. Go make things. Whether that's a few iphone photos or a project that will take a whole year to create. Write your creative ideas down and take one day a month (or more if you have the flexibility) to execute one of the ideas. Make this a monthly routine. You'll learn things that you will be able to implement into your business. You'll take risks that you normally wouldn't take on a paid gig. This is where mistakes can be a beautiful thing.
When you run a creative business it's tough. People depend on you to do "cool stuff" and that can create a lot of pressure at times. Well, get used to it because that's the life you chose. Figure out ways to deal with it. Quit thinking about it and do it.
I'm fascinated with people following their dreams. What does that really mean though? It sounds so simple, quit your job and start following your dream. Done deal. You're happy now. That's about as far from the truth as it gets. "Living the dream" isn't easy. I thought I knew what my dream was but I'm starting to realize it's always changing. Another thing Chase said yesterday was "I only sleep in my bed about 100 days a year". I really thought about that. Is that what I want? Do I want to be away from the people I love that much? I don't entirely know but my heart says I don't think so. I'd like to find a better balance for myself. Does that mean I should give up? Hell no! That's Chase's dream not mine. I think it's about doing what you love as much as possible to make a living and actually being able to live a life that makes you happy.
So remember, just go.
I saw this video the other day and it really got me motivated. I hope it does the same for you.
