Parents always emphasize how important it is to share. Youtube has made millions off of sharing. With the internet, it's just so easy. Well it's about to get even easier. When I share music with friends it forces me to have some sort of medium. Whether it's a flash drive, CD or hard drive there has to be some sort of hardware. Dropbox eliminates this need.
Simply put, Dropbox is software that syncs your files online and across your computers. It puts a little folder on your computer that acts like a hard drive. You can store up to 2GB for free and there's an option to pay more for more space.
Here's where it gets cool. You can invite friends to share the folder. So I have set up and account and have 5 people sharing one folder where we share music. At anytime, one of the 5 people can put something in the Dropbox or copy something from the Dropbox to their computer. It's so easy!
The great thing is you can share anything. Families can share photos, music, video or documents. Only if you chose to share the folder will anybody have access.
Here's where Apple wins again. Dropbox has an app in the iPhone market which enables iPhone users the ability to access anything they put in the box from their phone. So, large photos or documents you don't want taking up space on your phone can be viewed on your phone without the storage space . Brilliant.
So far, I have shared a fair amount of music with friends but my biggest hope is to figure out how to use Dropbox as a way to send large photo packages to clients. I hate using third party email services to send over files. They just seem to sketch me out. I am sure the ability is there, I just need to dive deeper into the software and figure it out.
So, if you are a musician who needs to share recordings with your band or just someone looking for an easy way to share music or photos with your friends, Dropbox is for you. It's super easy to install and get started. Download it here and get started today.
