Don't Look Back

Several months ago I worked with local musician Jack The Ripper on his debut album "Don't Look Back". Jack is a producer first but ended up singing on a few of the tracks as well.  Seattle locals like Geologic from Blue Scholars, Spaceman, Dyme Def and Grynch are only a few of the dope emcees who are featured on this album. The album is solid from start to finish and touches on several different styles. Don't Look Back is available on iTunes and you can download it here.

I was stoked to be able to do the photography and design for this project. Below are some of the photos we took for the album and then the album design itself. I definitely recommend you pick this up and support the Seattle local.

January Photo of the Month

Holy smokes! These last two months have been the best two months for business. I've been working 7 days a week for the last month or so putting in 10 hour days. It's been awesome and tiring at the same time. I got a bunch of new gear with my tax return and can't wait to really put it to use in the next few weeks.

This is the second month now I've been more than 10 days late on my blogging... It's my way of making you believe I'm busy...

Anyways, this month was so amazing for shooting. I had three projects with musicians to do their photos and album design. All are turning out really dope!

This photo was from the Dice photo shoot. I really wanted to post the behind the scenes video with it but I haven't had time to edit the clips yet. Oh well. The shoot went crazy well! Her project is titled "The Foundation" so we really wanted to get some cement and grime in the shoot. We got "access" to a construction site that I spotted which only the foundation had been laid. We also got access to use this wonderful garage in Phinney Ridge. We were brainstorming where to shoot if it rained and I started thinking dark grimey basements. We were strolling along 3rd Ave NW and came across some awesome grimey cement garages. We pulled over and knocked on the door to be greeted by a wonderful lady "Marie". She said "use it as much as you want just don't forget about me when your famous". How rad.

This was the biggest production I have dealt with yet. Tawnya aka Dice really put  a  lot into the shoot. It really made a huge difference in how the pictures turned out. The make up, the hair, the outfit and the energy. It was great! I really worked hard on this shoot and I think it shows.

I will be posting some more shots in the week to come along with the behind the scenes video.

Also, as I am writing this I am sending all the album design files to Copycats Media for her new project. I will be posting some links on where to hear and buy her new album very soon.

New Website Coming Soon...

About one year ago this website poked it's little head out and came alive. It's mother, Donald DeSantis, nursed it with love until it was able to walk on it's own two feet into cyberspace. When I first started Joe Photo & Design as my business, I was pretty involved in the music scene. Back in those days I went by "Joseph Average". Joseph was my alter ego. He was the fun creative side of Mike. Now don't get me wrong, Mike can be fun and creative but Joseph was the name I took on while in creative mode. When I decided to start doing photography and design work, it only made sense to use the name that my future clientele knew me as.

Musicians were primarily the folks I worked with. They needed photos for albums and promotional material. They needed flyers for shows and websites. Most of these musicians didn't even know my real name. Knowing all of this, I chose to go with Joe Photo & Design instead of Mike Folden blahdidy blah.

One year later, and I have grown so much and gained a whole new type of clientele. I still work with musicians a lot but I also work with families, restaurants, small businesses and young professionals. It only makes sense to me to give the man behind all the hard work some credit (cough...me...clearing throat...)

All that said, I have chose to start using my real name as my business. Mikefolden.com will be launching within the next two weeks and I can't wait. It's built on a really easy content management system which allows me to update my portfolio as needed and provide high quality slideshows of my work.

Once again, Donald is making this thing look really pretty and we are about half way there. By the way, if you are looking for an awesome web designer he's your guy.

So what does the change mean to you? Just a different website address (the old site will send you to the new site so don't worry) and a less stressful conversation when you're telling your friends about your good friend Mike Folden who is a photographer but goes by Joe Photo but his real name is Mike and Joe comes from.... you get the picture.

If you subscribe to my blog via email don't worry. Nothing changes. You will just start getting the new versions automatically.

Thanks so much for all the support and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the new look!

-Mike

The Garden of Priya.

priyamay-002 Since I started my journey in photography I have done many different shoots. If you remember the Photo of the Month for February then you remember how easy it is to forget the beauty in your own backyard. This photo shoot is another great example. I have a gorgeous girlfriend and we have never done a photo shoot! I decided to take her to the Rhody Ridge Park in Mill Creek. This place is maintained by an elderly couple who apparently received the land through some grant. It's basically their backyard. If you go to check it out you will likely be greeted by one of them and instantly fall in love with the landscape and their personality.
